Leadership Begins at Home
After considering various topics for my first blog, I realized that the best focus would be to share where my passion lies: connecting with people.
As a community relations professional, establishing and cultivating relationships was vital to achieve the objectives established by the organization I represented.
Success was measured through participation in activities that promoted positive awareness of the organization to a broad audience. Over time, I became the “face” of the organization in the community.
As an individual, I wanted to really connect to the community outside of my professional commitments. How?
Everyone wears many “hats” simultaneously, some are work-related and some personal: business professional, small business owner, neighbor, parent, son/daughter, auntie/uncle, grandparent, mentor, sports fan, etc. Each hat comes with specific responsibilities.
Somehow, one of those hats glued itself to my head! It was the professional hat. Has that happened to you? I found myself asking:
- As the face of the organization, can I take off the professional hat?
- What does it take to dissolve hat glue?
- Is this just a work/life imbalance?
- How can I really connect to the city I call home?
With most of our day spent in the working world, no doubt many business leaders pondered similar questions. I found a simple answer.
Volunteer service targeted to my passion. I believe a true leader is someone who serves others and inspires them to take action. Leadership isn’t just for organizations. Leadership begins at home.
Volunteer service is leadership in action that can inspire you and your family to build a legacy of giving.
Connecting involves sharing of ourselves with others. Our individual actions collectively contribute toward the greatness of our community.
My goal is to inspire you to truly connect with your community and share your passion, so you can encourage others to do the same.
Future posts will explore my thoughts on volunteer service, community relations, neighborly kindness, connecting with others and allowing your uniqueness to shine through in all you do.

I invite you to share your thoughts on my first blog or comment on these questions: Should leadership begin at home? What is your passion? How do you share it with others? Do you feel connected to your community?

My background is in public relations and I feel my strongest asset is relationship building as well. I’ve done freelance work while being a stay-at-home mom and have volunteered my skills with fundraisers and productions at our school. It’s a chance to know so many more people – parents, students, teachers and administrators – and it’s been so gratifying. I’d encourage anyone to at least do one volunteer project a year where your passion/talents can meet a need. The absolute Grace that comes out of it will amaze you!
Thanks for sharing your volunteer service efforts, Pat J! You’re setting a great example for your children.
This is very inspiring, Giovanis. Very nice kick-off!
Thanks Melodie!
I love what you said about leadership not being just for organizations. In my humble opinion, that couldn’t be more true. Our community is lucky to have you. Keep on connecting!
I appreciate the compliment, Mia! I believe each one of us has a reserve of untapped leadership potential.
